Occupy Brooklyn General Assembly Minutes – 11/20/11

November 24, 2011 in Minutes

Occupy Brooklyn General Assembly
11-20-11
The Atlantic Center Mall
4:00 – 6:00 P.M.
Minutes taken by JR
  •  Members of the Internet Working Group presented a proposal for the G.A. to endorse a statement of opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). The G.A. discussed the details of the proposal; addressed questions from the G.A.; and accepted amendments to the proposal. The G.A. reached consensus on the proposal, and it passed. (For information on the proposal, visit: http://occupybk.org/2011/11/19/how-to-stop-the-sopa-and-protect-ip-acts/ )

  • The Occupation Location Working Group discussed the potential of starting an occupation. Various questions were posed: Who can commit to occupy? Indoors or outdoors? What is the purpose of the occupation?
  • Different locations were suggested for an occupation. Various concerns were raised: How much do we lose when they get broken up? Should we broaden the definition of “occupy” (short-term occupations, moving locations, etc.)? Also, the cold weather is coming.
  • Some people were more in favor of occupying in light of the Zuccotti “eviction.” What about “pop-up” occupations? Occupations with different “levels”? Occupation is just one aspect of this movement.

Proposal Against SOPA and PIPA

November 20, 2011 in Past Proposals

This proposal was submitted to the Occupy Brooklyn General Assembly on November 20, 2011, and received consent.  The New York City General Assembly followed suit on a similar proposal on December 4, 2011.

The Occupy Brooklyn General Assembly hereby expresses its firm opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act in the U.S. House of Representatives (H.R.3261) and the Protect IP Act in the U.S. Senate (S.968) as they are currently written and calls on all Occupy movements nationwide to mobilize supporters against their adoption.

Our opposition is based on our belief that these bills place too much vaguely-defined and unchecked power into the hands of copyright holders and the Department of Justice.  This creates the potential for internet censorship and poses an immediate threat to digital platforms that:

a) play a central role in the organizing of community meetings and direct actions;
b) are essential channels through which millions of Brooklynites, especially those in marginalized communities, share information vital to holding their government accountable; and,
c) are integral to interoccupation communication and cooperation.

We commit to taking individual action to ensure our respective legislators oppose or make significant improvements to this bill, commit to signing as individuals the Change.org petition (“Stop the Internet control bill now!”) or similar petitions, and empower the Internet Working Group to arrange a delegation to encourage the New York City General Assembly to take greater action against this legislation.

How to Stop the SOPA and Protect IP Acts

November 19, 2011 in Calls to Action, News

Update Dec. 5th: The New York City General Assembly last night consented to a proposal similar to Brooklyn’s to oppose SOPA and PIPA!

The Brooklyn General Assembly today consented to a proposal stating its opposition to the “Stop Online Piracy Act” and the “Protect IP” Acts, two broadly-worded pieces of federal legislation that pose a potential threat to the infrastructure of the Internet, especially tools used by the Occupy movement.  You can read the adopted proposal by clicking here and learn more about SOPA and PIPA below.

Most importantly, here’s how you can take action against these bills:

Demand Opposition from Your U.S. Representative or Senator

Find your Representative and tell him/her to oppose SOPA

Find your Senator and tell him/her to oppose PIPA, the Protect IP Act

Personalize a Form Letter provided by FightForTheFuture.org

Occupy Brooklyn/Occupy Wall Street Joint General Assembly Minutes – 11/17/11

November 18, 2011 in Minutes

After the #N17 march across the Brooklyn Bridge, around 200 protesters gathered for a spontaneous joint general assembly.  Individuals from #OccupyBrooklyn and #OWS facilitated.  The following are notes from at least two people in attendance:

From RP:
“A lot of interest in the ‘OCCUPY BROOKLYN!’ banner on the bridge and at Cadman Plaza. People kept coming up to us and asking about Occupy Brooklyn, and I very quickly ran out of flyers for Sunday’s GA. Some from Brooklyn GA decided to have a spontaneous assembly. We marched with the banner ahead of the brass band from the open park area in Cadman Plaza to the Brooklyn War Memorial, and stood at the top of the steps facing the grass; the band kept playing and everyone faced the steps chanting with fists in the air. There were probably close to 200 people there at this point and the energy was really good. Mic checks started, and we announced that there would be a Brooklyn GA beginning momentarily. Ryan from OWS Facilitation facilitated (he was great and kept it very positive), and it was decided that we would just do working group report backs (mostly groups from OWS), and then announcements.

On November 17, Occupy groups, unions, students, community organizations, and individuals from across the country will engage in an unforgettable national day of action, referred to as #N17, right here in New York City.  It’s the two-month anniversary of the Occupy movement, and events across the five boroughs will bring thousands of people and their stories of economic injustice onto the streets to resist austerity, reclaim our democracy, and recreate our economy.

Brooklynites will gather at several locations, including the Borough Hall and Broadway Junction subway hubs.

For the latest updates, check out the #OWS Facebook event page, which gives a sense of the evolving schedule:

7:00 am: SHUT DOWN WALL STREET RESIST austerity
Enough of this economy that divides us – it’s time for an economy that works for all. We will gather at 7:00 a.m., before the ring of the Trading Floor Bell, to confront Wall Street with the stories of people on the frontlines of economic injustice. There, before the Stock Exchange, we will exchange stories rather than stocks.

    URGENT: NYC-Area Occupations Uniting Tonight

    November 15, 2011 in News

Your voice is urgently needed in Liberty Plaza right now and tonight!

Special Note: Many Occupy Brooklyn events scheduled for tonight are being postponed or cancelled.  Please confirm details with relevant working groups.

Members of the 99% from Eastchester to East New York are gathering tonight in lower Manhattan to show solidarity with and lend support to Occupy Wall Street, which was violently evicted by the NYPD under the cover of darkness. An initial court order this morning allowed protesters back in the park, but was ignored by the City of New York.  Around 4:45 p.m., a judge reversed the initial decision and ruled that protesters should not be allowed in the park with tents. Confusion remains over when the park will be re-opened to the public and whether protesters will be allowed in.  There may be appeals to the ruling.  This is a developing story and details are hazy.

As of 5 p.m. EST, word is that others will join OWS at either Liberty Square or Foley Square for a 7 p.m. rally and General Assembly.  Given the nature of today’s events, this could change.

Please check OccupyWallSt.org,follow OBKGA on Facebook, or follow the conversation on Twitter for the latest updates.

How to Help the Evicted #OWS Protesters

    November 15, 2011 in News

From our friends at OccupyWallSt.org and InterOccupy.org:

Protesters gather in Duarte Square after being evicted from Liberty Plaza in the dark of night by the NYPD

Liberty Plaza (Zuccotti Park), home of Occupy Wall Street for the past two months and birthplace of the 99% movement that has spread across the country and around the world, was evicted by a large police force in full riot gear.

NOW is the time to help.  If you feel as deeply about the Occupy movement as we do, show your support by taking real steps today!

We are counting on people all over the country to come out and support us to keep this movement going!

IF YOU ARE IN NYC AREA!!!!!

Come TO GENERAL ASSEMBLY tonight at 7pm in Liberty Plaza/Zuccotti Park

They can kick us out, but they can’t stop us from reassembling.  Let’s show them that truth by showing up at Liberty Plaza with the biggest General Assembly yet!  Come to GA tonight at 7pm!
