Endorse the May 1st General Strike Call
January 18, 2012 in Future Proposals
That the Brooklyn General Assembly endorse the call that’s gone out for May 1st to be a coordinated “general strike”. That we also spend the time over the next three months to re-think what a general strike can look like in 2012, and why it’s important to rise up to this challenge, in whatever ways we are currently able.

I endorse the general strike!

This proposal has been passed, is there a text spelling out Occupy Brooklyn’s endorsement and commitment to organize for the general strike?

The GA did not come to a consensus on language used for May 1st, nor did we decide on what we will organize for the day yet.
Here are the minutes regarding this portion of the GA where this was discussed:
Proposal – Endorse May Day general strike action originating from Occupy Oakland.
Discussion of purpose of general strike; it’s character. How is it different/similar to
a day of action? Several other Occupy groups have already endorsed.
The original proposal from Occupy Oakland was read. GA did not have consensus
on endorsing that specific language. Was consensus on proposal for OBK to
support a general strike on May Day; to be defined.

Once again I would like to suggest that the GA should not vote on proposals that would commit the group to an action or position at the same meeting at which they are proposed. The exception could be be if there were an agreed upon time urgency. Proposals could be shared on line and/or raised at a meeting and voting could be postponed for the next GA.
I think it is important that people have time to consider and discuss over time important issues and also that decisions for the larger group be made by whoever could coincidentally make a particular GA. (As I understand it, for example, this proposal regarding May Day was made at a GA which was relatively poorly attended.
